Character

Name: Lena Kaligaris
Canon: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Canon point: Just before she apologizes to Kostos in the first book
Age: 15

History: Lena on Wikiepedia, Sisterhood of Traveling Pants Wiki Entry (sadly there is very little useful information in here though)

Personality:
  • Artistic: There is no doubt that Lena has an artistic eye. She is shown in a couple of chapters to be an aspiring artist and the artistic one in the Septembers and many a scenery and situations are described in full detail from her perspective with mentions of vivid colors and the use of the five senses, namely visual and tactile. This artistic leaning later on would clash with George’s old-fashioned lawyer sensibilities that he tried to stop her from reaching her dreams to be an artist in Girls in Pants, even going as far as initially declaring that he would not pay for her tuition in Rhode Island School of Design, and her interest in art was the one thing Lena finds solitude in the third story while avoiding the drama among her family over the move to Bethesda that her grandmother Valia didn’t ask for. Later on, she would find the strength to find her own voice with the help of her wheelchair-bound summer art class teacher Annik Marchand who encourages her to go for a scholarship by making portraits of the important people in her life (and Carmen’s stepbrother Paul Rodman) and helps her out by using the ‘draw the chair’ philosophy to overcome the emotional pain rather than shying away from it and to find enclosure with her father, Valia, and Effie, as well as acknowledging the pain she felt after breaking up with Kostos. Through art, Lena finds the strength to overcome trials and tribulations in her life and be stronger than she could have imagined.
  • Introvert: Lena’s not a people person: that claim to fame goes to her little sister Effie. She has very few friends who are not the Septembers and she was left iffy when Valia tried to get her to befriend Kostos who is shown to be a really nice guy despite her attempts to dismiss altogether, which was sadly lost in the film adaptation. It is later on revealed that Lena is no different from her quiet Bapi who shares with her quiet strength and introspective mindset. It does take a lot for her to overcome it and be social towards the people around, but when she does, it can be rewarding for her, especially with renweing her familial bonds with her grandparents when they in their own ways recognize the misunderstanding in question.
  • Judgmental: It is shown early into the start of her Santorini trip that Lena can be very judgmental towards people (most especially with boys, considering that Ann Brashares did based her on the Greek virgin goddess of the hunt and moon Artemis) mainly due to how many would look at her for her looks and not thinking about the rest of her. This gets absolutely worse when she first met Kostos and he was smitten by her, which causes her to dislike him immediately. Later on, this trait rears its ugly head when she sees him allegedly spying on her skinny dipping in an olive grove, the one conflict that nearly damages their grandparents’ otherwise close friendship. She eventually comes to realize that Kostos wasn’t all what she thought initially of him when she was told about his life story and seeing him dancing with the grannies during a major Greek religious holiday. There is still a good chance though that she can look dismissive at some of the characters like how she judged Kostos originally in the first story, though it is a lesser chance that this trait will show up at times.
  • Indecisive: Her friend Tibby once said ”if you ask Lena to pick A or B, she’d always choose C. This means that she, Lena, belives that she is not the best of trust and love easily compared to Kostos and Bridget who, despite losing their loved ones, are still able to live and love freely. Lena has a tendency to overthink and justify things all the times, especially when she tried to explain the olive grove incident to Valia, and it hints in the fact that she has difficulties in following her emotions. This can explain why she has a hard time to open up to people and acknowledge her feelings for Kostos multiple times across her series. For much of the series, Lena tries to avoid emotionally difficult situations, which also includes her struggle with the growing feelings for Kostos in the first book.
  • Loyal: There is doubt that Lena has her full loyalty to her friends, the Septembers. The girls have been connected due to their mothers being due to give birth in September and their friendship with each other stays strong over the years whereas those of their mothers didn’t. It’s through their friendship where they learn more about themselves as individuals. Throughout the series, while they may be apart, they’re always there to listen to each other through the words in their letters and support each other during tough times with the Pants serving as the symbol of their friendship and as a way for their presence to be felt whenever one of the girls wears the Pants during a situation related to her, in Lena’s case, learning to trust others and realizing her feelings towards Kostos. Lena does her best to attend to her friends during their time of need, especially when Bridget feels guilty after he self-destructive pursuit to go after Eric Richman went to nowhere. She is meaning to go to Baja California to be Bee’s support and give the Pants to her in the end of the first book in canon.

  • Always Keep In Mind: Lena, while being a relatively good person, can be quite judgmental towards people, especially with how people tend to judge her by her beautiful looks and with her first interactions with Kostas in the first book. She can also be very indecisive when making decisions as pointed out by Tibby, as well as not being as social as Effie or Valia. Not to mention that she can come off as rude at times as her olive grove swimming incident with Kostos checking her out as an example.

Questions: Write an IC answer to the following questions:

What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy? Oh that is is really tricky to answer. There are so many to look through. But if I’m going to take at least one subject, I would choose Discovery since it is the magic of creation, and me being an artist allows me to create new things through my art. That’s basically the subject I’m hoping to learn in here.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while? I would definitely take the chance to go home as I want to apologize to someone from my world over a mistake that nearly ended our grandparents’ friendship with each other. I feel so guilty for being a jerk to him when he is being such a good person and the least that I can do for him is to say ‘I’m sorry’.

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react? I honestly don’t have any at the moment besides myself. But if that enemy does show, I’ll try to reason with them as much as possible. If they don’t budge, I’ll have to fight for what I believe in, no matter what.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force? When there is no other choice to settle things civilly.

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be? What a lot of people here has said, to use your powers to help each other and the community.

    Special Considerations

Your Special Something: An Item of Power

    Rank Your House Choice: Random

    Items:
  • Art stuff: Lena is an artist and she would gain strength through learning about her craft, so she will want to get her art supplies (such as paints, paintbrushes, a sketch pad, an easel, a paint palette, pencils, and charcoal) again.
  • Letters from Carmen, Tibby, and Bridget: Letters are an important part of the Sisterhood’s plans to remain in contact with each other throughout the first four books, especially with the first book since it’s their summer spent apart from each other. So it would be nice for Lena to get her childhood friends’ letters to her so she wouldn’t feel bad missing them too much.

  • Anything Else: I have seen the first film and I do use Alexis Blendel as her PB, but I will be drawing primarily from the first book for reference.
